James Madison University relied on the wisdom of its favorite Founding Father regarding differing opinions when, within the span of one day, it welcomed two guests, Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama and former U.S. House of Representatives Republican Majority Leader Tom DeLay, to campus.
James Madison no doubt would have been interested to witness how human nature, reason and discourse played out at JMU in such a brief, significant bit of time.
Speaking Oct. 28 and Oct. 27, respectively, Obama and DeLay expressed divergent messages. At both events, they encountered a JMU community whose civility eloquently embodied the university's quest to prepare enlightened citizens for lifetimes of civic involvement and contribution, coupled with respect.
